Eco Friendly Metal Buttons

Although metal buttons are an essential part of our everyday attire, not many of us have ever paid enough attention to their environmental impact.

But with enhanced environmental awareness, people are getting more conscious of the use of metal buttons and their otherwise harmful impact on ecological stability.

Before that, have you ever heard the eco friendly metal buttons? In response to the growing need for environmentally friendly products, companies are now creating metal buttons with no particles of lead, nickel, or other hazardous elements.

1.EU RoHS Certification

EU RoHS Certification limits the presence of certain elements in the products to minimize the harmful impact they cast on the environment. According to the directive of EU RoHS Certification, the presence of Lead(Pb), mercury(Hg), hexavalent chromium(Cr (VI)), polybrominated biphenyls(PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) should not exceed the determined limit of 1000ppm, for cadmium, the limit is 100ppm only.

Lead(Pb) has been recognized as a harmful metal element that can pose severe threats to the nervous system. It can be found in impurities, pigments, multiple metal alloys, polythene, etc.

Extensive exposure to the products containing excessive Lead(Pb) can inhibit neurodevelopment in children.) The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has capped the upper limit of Lead(Pb) content in children’s products from 300ppm to 100ppm to minimize the harmful impact of Lead(Pb).

The limit will be applied on the products except for coatings for children aged 12 years and under. For the coatings on the children’s products, the total allowed concentration for Lead has also been lowered from 600ppm to 90ppm.

2. OEKE-TEX Certification

When it comes to certifying textile products, almost every brand opts for OEKE-TEX certification. But what is OEKE-TEX certification?

It is the most reliable and effective textile label around the globe that verifies where the textile article is eco-friendly or not. For inspection sake, the Environmental Textile association has offered affiliation letters to some of the renowned textile inspection agencies offering their service in 15 countries around the globe.

If a textile item of product is certified as OEKO-TEX standard 100, it transpires that it is eco-friendly and poses no threat to human health.

All international tests and certificates are unified under Standard 100 conducted by OEKO-TEX®, which tests textile products on almost all processing levels. If you need a valid authentication to assure a textile item, always look for OEKO-TEX® certification.

To bestow any textile being the “confidence textile,” the items must pass specific tests and meet standards. If a product gets the standard 100 labels, it will be considered a safe and healthy item to contact the clients.

3.Nickel Free Test

Textile brands must undergo another significant test conducted on electroplated clothing parts to make textile products export-worthy and ensure safety. The test determines nickel release in all kinds of electroplated products used in the textile industry. The standard limit for the nickel tolerance is 0.2ug/cm.2/week.

According to international standards, it is obligatory to test your products for possible nickel release before exporting them to any country around the globe. But why do we need a test in the first place?

Nickel found in any electroplated product tends to cause contact allergies. Nickel present in any nickel-containing product might get in contact with the skin, thus causing severe allergies.

Also, if a person gets in extended contact with soluble nickel salt, it can lead to national contact dermatitis. According to survey statistics, almost 20% of people directly contact nickel develop severe allergies.

Before exporting any clothing, jewelry, accessories to America, Japan, or any other country, always opt for a nickel release test.

4.Needle Detection for All Metal Trims

How often do you find a broken needle or a sharp fragment in your newly bought apparel? Maybe never. Because these products have passed the Needle Detection test, most countries oblige the textile sewing industries to give their products through a needle detection test.

The product undergoes a metal detector test where the machine identifies any metal residue or broken needle still embedded in the garment.

To avoid any misreading on the machine, the product under supervision needs not to have any metal component whatsoever. It means all the metal buttons, zippers, and other metal accessories must be able to pass the needle detection test.

The needle detection machines come in multiple varieties and technologies depending on the operation scale and requirements. But usually, the device identifies the items having a certain amount of ferromagnetic metal component as needle fragments.

If the metal buttons and zippers you have used in your apparel are not according to the standard, they might create trouble in the needle detection test.

A needle detection test can also detect the nickel content in a textile product. But even if there is no nickel in their composition, still many electroplated products fail the needle detection test, and here are the reasons for that.

  • Presence of excessive metal accessories on the garment.
  • Printings, hanging tags, and wrong identification sheets present on the product.
  • Inclusion of impurities while processing the clothes.

5.Visual Inspection Standard Requirements for Appearance

Along with passing multiple tests, the textile metal products also have to give the visual appearance test. In this test, the experts will use the sense of sight to analyze whether the garment metal accessories are according to the set standards or not.

Here are some of the steps involved in the visual analysis test. 

  1. There should be uniformity in the colors as there should not be any broken, missing, cracked, or wrong color accessories.
  2. There should be no foreign material attached to the products like dust, oil, dirt, etc.
  3. There must be no moisture on the product, including the electroplating reservoir water.
  4. There must not be any crack or particles attached to the product, and it should be smooth on touch.
  5. The product must not have any scratches, crushing, or hanging marks that deform its appearance.
  6. If you outsource the tin-lead soldering part of metal button manufacturing, a small amount of not more than 5% of pits should be allowed for exposure without affecting the solderability.
  7. The coating must be solid without any poor adhesive, thus cueing blistering or peeling.
